What are the benefits of metal roofing

As the Naperville area’s leading roofing company, we are often asked about the differences in roofing materials. Carmody Construction offers three main types of roofing materials: laminated asphalt shingles, designer and metal.

By far, the majority of the roofing jobs we complete are done with laminated asphalt shingles. They are the most cost effective and readily available. However, more and more homeowners are beginning to ask us about the benefits and costs of metal roofing.  Here are some of the most commonly asked questions we get from homeowners considering metal roofing.

How long does a metal roof last?

Here in the Midwest our climate is prone to extreme swings in temperature. Summer highs can reach over 100 degrees and winter lows can plummet to -20 or more.  Such swings in temperatures make asphalt shingles prone to decomposition after about 20 years. The biggest benefit of metal roofing is its lifespan. Metal roofing can last 50 years or more. So, while the material costs may eclipse asphalt shingles up front, you’ll likely need three new shingled roofs in the time you have one metal roof.

How much does a metal roof cost?

There’s no doubt that metal roofing is significantly more expensive than traditional asphalt shingles. It’s an investment. Depending on the design and material used, metal roofing can cost on average 3 to 5 times more than laminated asphalt shingles. However, because the roofing sheets are larger than traditional shingle squares, you may be able to save some money on installation labor costs. Most metal roofs may also be installed over your old roof, which could mean even more savings on labor.

How much flexibility is there in metal roofing design?

When it comes to traditional laminated asphalt shingles, there’s really not much difference homeowners can find in color and design. However, with metal roofing homeowners can choose from a plethora of design and color options. What’s more, metal roofing can also be painted. So, if you get tired of the color you originally chose or want to extend the life of the roof, painting is a great option. As long as the original paint is still sticking to the roof, painting over it should pose no significant issues.

Are metal roofs more energy efficient?

The short answer is yes! Metal roofs can save you as much as 40 percent on your energy costs. Because of their durability and the installation methods, metal roofs do a much better job of keeping the elements, including cold and wind, out of your home.
