Metal Roofing vs. Shingle Roofing – Which Should you Choose?
Aug 13, 2018Are you in the market for a new roof? If so, you might be wondering which roof is the best fit for your home. While there are many options to choose from, it can be overwhelming to weigh all of the advantages and disadvantages of each. Luckily, we’ve put together a list of pros and cons of the 2 most popular types of roofing – metal and shingle – to help you make an informed decision.
Metal Roofing
Although the majority of roofing jobs we complete are done with laminated asphalt shingles, more and more homeowners are showing interest in metal roofing. Here are the pros and cons of metal roofing that you should consider:
Pros: | Cons: |
Lasts longer. The biggest benefit to a metal roof is its lifespan. Metal roofs are expected to last 50 years or more, while shingle roofs are typically expected to last 25 years or less. More durable. Metal roofs are stronger and more durable than shingle roofs. They are designed to withstand extreme weather conditions such as strong winds, hail, ice, rain, high heat, and extreme cold. Energy efficient. Metal roofs can save you up to 40% on your energy bills. They do a great job at keeping the elements out of your home. Low maintenance. The level of upkeep is minimal. Generally, the upkeep only includes clearing the roof of any leaves, twigs, and debris twice a year after a strong storm. |
More labor intensive. Metal roofing is considered a precision installation, and therefore requires more labor, time, and resources to install. More expensive. Typically, metal roofing is 3 to 5 times more expensive than a traditional asphalt shingle roof. Any repairs needed are also going to cost you more. Limited qualified contractors. There are significantly fewer roofing contractors who are equipped and qualified to install metal roofing. Therefore, it may be harder to find one who can perform the job. Oil canning. Probably the biggest disadvantage of a metal roof is oil canning- the visible waviness in the flat areas of metal roofing. |
Shingle Roofing
When many people think of roofing, they think of shingle roofing because it is the most traditional roofing method and the most popular among homeowners. Shingle roofs have their fair share of advantages and disadvantages:
Pros: | Cons: |
Easier to install. Shingles typically require less time and labor to install. They come pre-packaged and ready to be nailed to the deck. Less expensive. Shingle roof installations are cheaper to install than metal roofing. Since they are easier to install, that also means that they are easier and cheaper to repair. More contractors available. Since shingle roofing is a more popular choice among homeowners and easier to install, there are more qualified contractors available who have the skills needed to install it. |
Short lifespan. Many shingle roofs last no longer than 25 years. Over time, shingles can lift or become damaged and tear off. Less durable. Shingles are more susceptible to damage, especially during harsh weather conditions. It is also common for shingle roofs to grow mold, mildew, and algae since moisture can get trapped between the panels. Less energy efficient. Asphalt shingles trap heat by the sun’s ray which can be transferred into the home. This can cause air conditioners to work extra hard to balance the temperature within the home, which can result in higher energy costs. |
